Where: Drexel University, College of Information Science and Technology Rush Building, Room 014 (lower level)
Time: 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm, followed by refreshments in the 4th floor loungeThe goal of this lecture series is to bring together academic librarians and library and information science students with an interest in academic librarianship to hear and learn more about contemporary issues in higher education that impact on our institutions and our libraries.
Come hear our fall lecture series speaker, Carrie Russell, of the American Library Association, discuss current issues in the area of copyright law that are of concern to all librarians, and those aspects of proposed changes to copyright that are likely to have significant impact on academic librarianship.
In our rapidly changing digital information environment, copyright is a key policy area that will determine how public and private institutions such as libraries, educational and research institutions will serve their public obligations. Copyright law will have a major influence on who will win and lose - both as creators and as users of information. Librarians play a crucial role in both understanding copyright law and its impact on libraries and advocating for the information rights of the public. Carrie Russell, Copyright Specialist of the American Library Association's Office for Information Technology Policy, will explore the current copyright legislative environment and suggest how academic librarians can protect the information rights of students and faculty.
Carrie Russell is a librarian with 14 years experience in academic libraries. Before joining ALA in 1999, she was Copyright Librarian at the University of Arizona where she developed copyright and fair use awareness programs for the academic community, and coordinated a project to mobilize faculty to address critical scholarly communications issues. Carrie has given presentations and workshops on copyright issues at state and national library conferences, and is the author of several educational brochures and articles on copyright issues.
