ACRL Legislative Luncheon
Monday, April 30

Please join us to share lunch, acquire information about legislative issues, and pick up strategies that will help you be a better academic library advocate. You are invited to the ACRL Legislative Luncheon which will be held on Monday, April 30. The ALA National Library Legislative Day takes place on Monday, April 30 and Tuesday, May 1. Its purpose is to raise awareness about the importance of federal funding for libraries. For the past two years, ACRL has sponsored a luncheon program with speakers and panelists, consisting of academic librarians and professional lobbyists, that addresses specific legislative issues of importance to academic libraries.

At this year's luncheon we will focus on three important legislative issues: 1) reauthorization of the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA), 2) the Uniform Computer Information Transactions Act (UCITA), and 3) the Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA). Charles Beard, the Director of Libraries at the State University of Illinois-West Georgia, will moderate the discussion and update us on CIPA. Althea Jenkins, the Executive Director of ACRL, will give a status report on LSTA Reauthorization. Rodney Peterson, the Director of Policy and Planning in the Office of Information Technology at the University of Maryland, will share his experiences fighting UCITA in Maryland. We hope you will join us this year.

ACRL is committed to advocating for public policy and legislation that enhances the contributions of academic libraries and librarians to learning, teaching and research. By participating in the ACRL Legislative Luncheon you will become better informed about the issues, and you will learn how to advocate for them. Please plan on attending the National Library Legislative Day and the ACRL Legislative Luncheon. ALA has set aside a block of rooms at the Holiday Inn on The Hill.
