Department Head: Technical Services and Collections Management

As a result of restructuring, and the creation of a new department, known as Infrastructure Services, FGCU Library Services is seeking an innovative leader to play a significant role in developing the department within the context of an evolving library organization and the Guiding Principles and Mission of the University and the Library.
Responsible for leadership in providing innovative and effective technical services and collections management in an outsourced environment. Trains and supervises departmental paraprofessional staff. Oversees contracts for outsourced acquisitions, cataloging, and processing. Does some original cataloging and oversees maintenance of records in the online catalog. Supervises library materials budget, approval plans, and other formal purchasing agreements including subscriptions for print and electronic resources. Maintains relations and negotiates license agreements with various vendors. Will prepare current catalog (NOTIS) for migration to new Library Management System (ALEPH). Collaborates on digital initiatives and projects that impact library operations. As a member of the University's faculty, participates in Library, FGCU and State University System committees, has opportunity to teach a "first year experience" course, and contributes to the development of librarianship. Reports to the Associate Director. With 295K volumes, 27 employees, a $2.6M budget, and a $17M expansion underway, the Library is establishing itself as a customer-centric provider of information and partner in the learning process. The library is a collegial, technology-rich setting where planning, innovation, and service occur in a Balanced Scorecard environment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
ALA-accredited MLS or foreign equivalent. Relevant experience in technical services. Successful supervisory experience. Superior organizational, and interpersonal skills. Ability to communicate effectively. Capacity to thrive in an environment of change and to foster that capacity in others. Knowledge of best practices and trends in the profession Strong computing and technology experience. Ability to perform original cataloging using AACR2rev, LCSH, and LC classification. Evidence of interest in professional development activities, including presentation and publication.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Professional experience in both technical services and collection management. Experience with an online bibliographic utility (OCLC) and an integrated library system (NOTIS), library system migration, and working with outsourcing vendors. Knowledge of MARC formats, metadata standards, and online authority control systems. Familiarity with cataloging non-print materials. A record of successfully developing, implementing, and evaluating short-term and long-term projects. A record of professional and/or scholarly activity, interest in teaching, and ability to contribute to the diversity of the organization are also desirable
In a January 2003 article, the New York Times said Fort Myers, "offers not only warmth and sunshine, but boating, beaches, spring-training Minnesota Twins and Boston Red Sox games, and a pedestrian-friendly downtown historic district with restored buildings and diet-busting restaurants." Florida does not have a state income tax, and The "City of Palms" enjoys a below average cost of living. Homestore.com calls Fort Myers "one of the two hottest places to buy a home in the southern US." FGCU, which opened its doors in 1997, is a state university of the liberal arts, sciences, and professional studies serving undergraduate and master's level students. It is particularly focused on environmental sensitivity, interdisciplinary learning, innovative high quality teaching, and service learning.
APPOINTMENT: This is a faculty position is eligible for a continuing multi-year contract with rank and salary commensurate with experience. Salary: $45,000 - negotiable. Benefits include nine paid holidays and 22 days annual leave/year, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, prescription drug plan, state basic term life insurance, a variety of retirement programs, 20% bookstore discount, and employee tuition vouchers for up to six credit hours per term.
