    Your Role: As a College Assistant, you will:

    • Deliver exceptional front-line service at our bustling circulation and technology service desks.
    • Assist with technical operations, library circulation, information services, and maintaining library materials.
    • Support library projects and initiatives to ensure lending runs smoothly.
    • Provide administrative support, including screening visitors and calls, relaying messages, and organizing documents.
    • Work evening and weekend shifts to ensure our library serves the community during all operating hours.

    Stony Brook University is seeking a PRODiG+ Fellow in the department of University Libraries / Special Collections and University Archives through the State University of New York (SUNY) Promoting Recruitment, Opportunity, Diversity, Inclusion and Growth Plus (PRODiG+) Postdoctoral Fellowship Program (PRODiG+). PRODiG+ is designed with two primary goals: (1) increasing the number and share of excellent diverse faculty committed to advancing the ideals of diversity, equity, and inclusion; and (2) strengthening the pipeline for retention and support of those faculty.     The Digital Curator is a PRODiG+ postdoctoral fellow who advances strategic digital initiatives with a strong commitment to ADA-compliant access. Working across the Libraries and SBU campuses, the curator supports innovative research and teaching through the development, interpretation, and stewardship of digital and digitized collections, including but not limited to primary sources.

    The position is a full-time, 12-month, non-tenure-track faculty position at the lecturer level to commence in Fall 2026. The successful candidate will be appointed for 2 years at an annual salary of $80,000 with comprehensive state benefits. The fellow will be a part of a mentored research environment and, with successful performance and demonstrated equitable and inclusive teaching strategies focused on student success, will be invited to join the tenure-track faculty at Stony Brook University after two years.

    The curator guides the Libraries’ web archiving program as a distinct responsibility, establishing collecting priorities and sustainable access strategies that document institutional and community histories. In partnership with faculty and researchers, the curator explores the use of computational methods and artificial intelligence (AI) to deepen engagement with digital collections and related scholarly resources.

    As a key contributor to digital content workflows, the curator supports forward-facing initiatives such as metadata creation, contextualization, user experience assessment, and interpretive content development across a range of digital assets. The role also includes supporting digitization and selective physical processing, ensuring collections and digital resources are accessible, discoverable, and meaningfully integrated into the University’s inclusive teaching practice, innovative research, and community engagement.

    Through collaboration with faculty, students, researchers, and community partners, the curator promotes inclusive pedagogical practices and strengthens engagement with the Libraries’ distinctive collections and digital resources across physical and virtual environments.

    The successful candidate’s appointment will be in University Libraries.

    • Current SUNY students, alumni, and/or Fellows.

    Reporting

    Responsibilities and Requirements

    • Digital Content & Metadata
      • Contribute to digital content workflows including digitization, metadata creation, access, maintenance, and enhancement.
      • Develop contextual and interpretive content supporting discovery and engagement.
      • Provide feedback on user experience and accessibility of digital platforms.
      • Support digitization initiatives in collaboration with library departments.
      • Support efforts to ensure ADA compliance of digital and instructional materials.
      • Assist with physical collection processing and preparation of materials for digitization.
    • Web Archiving
      • Guide the development and coordination of the Libraries’ web archiving program.
      • Develop collecting priorities and appraisal criteria for web content.
      • Assist with implementing tools and workflows for web capture, preservation, and access, while coordinating efforts among library staff and faculty.
      • Collaborate with campus partners to document institutional and community web presence.
    • Instruction and Research Support
      • Develop and deliver instruction sessions integrating digital primary sources.
      • Promote digital collections in research and teaching.
      • Collaborate with faculty to design assignments incorporating digital collections.
      • Create accessible online tutorials and learning objects.
      • Provide reference and research support primarily for digital collections, with additional support for physical collections as needed.
    • DEIA-Centered Curation and Pedagogy
      • Center DEIA principles in teaching and digital curation.
      • Apply inclusive descriptive practices and culturally responsive metadata.

    Qualifications

    Required Qualifications:

    • A relevant master’s degree, PhD, or other advanced degree (foreign equivalent accepted), or an equivalent combination of education and experience commensurate with the position’s requirements.
    • Experience in special collections, archives, or digital collections/content environments.
    • Demonstrate personal, academic, and/or work experience engaging with diversity, equity, and inclusion and/or a commitment to facilitating and enhancing diversity, equity and inclusion efforts in the campus community. Such experiences may include, but is not limited to, an academic/scholarly track record focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion; work, volunteer/unpaid/community service, or related experience/expertise in serving underserved or vulnerable areas and/or populations.

    • Coursework in archives/library

    The Instruction and Research Librarian in the Libraries’ Humanities and History unit fosters information literacy and critical research skills among students and faculty through an interdisciplinary and liberal arts-based approach to teaching, learning, and research support.

    Reporting to the Head of Humanities & History, the Librarian provides programmatic instruction, research consultations, and other learning-support services designed to produce the literacies and habits of mind required for research and scholarship in a contemporary information environment. The Librarian is responsible for sustainable in-person, online, and asynchronous services for all University constituencies but especially for undergraduates and master’s students. As part of the Humanities & History (H&H) team, the Librarian participates in front-line reference services and is the coordinator of H&H’s consultation services.

    This position works closely with the Teaching and Undergraduate Services Librarian and other public-service staff—as well as colleagues in the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) and academic partners across campus. As assigned, the Librarian serves as a liaison to specific academic departments and research centers and, as appropriate, acquires research materials in selected disciplinary and interdisciplinary subjects.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Instruction, Consultations, and Reference
    • Coordinate research consultations on behalf of the Humanities & History unit.
    • Contribute as an instructor to the Libraries’ teaching partnerships, including those for the Writing Program and other Core Curriculum courses, as well as the Libraries’ general library workshops.
    • Provide regular consultations and research-support to students and faculty through one-on-one research appointments and contributions to the Libraries’ references services (including the in-person Butler help desk and the Ask a Librarian chat-reference service).

    Outreach and Liaison Duties

    • Promote engagement with library services through strategic partnerships with academic departments and centers.
    • Participate in selected orientation and welcome events.
    • As assigned, serve as a liaison to specific departments and/or centers.
    • Committee Work
    • Contribute to Libraries and University committees, task forces, and related initiatives to enhance and promote library services.

    Professional Development

    • Keep up with evolving scholarly and professional trends, especially those pertinent to teaching, learning assessment, and service design.
    • Represent Columbia University Libraries in local and national forums to develop professionally and promote the Libraries’ work and goals.

    Qualifications

    Required

    • An ALA-accredited Master’s of Library Science or a relevant graduate degree and professional experience
    • Familiarity with the work and mission of a contemporary academic research library
    • Formal or informal experience teaching in an academic setting; knowledge of pedagogical methods and trends in higher education
    • Demonstrated familiarity with a range of relevant research tools and environments
    • Strong public service ethos and commitment to providing inclusive and equitable services
    • Demonstrated organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills

    Preferred

    • Experience as a liaison librarian

    The Miriam & Ira D. Wallach Division of Art, Prints, and photographs is composed of five collections that represent one of the most significant art and art historical research collections in the country. The Print Collection comprises a wide-ranging collection of close to 300,000 original prints and select drawings, along with illustrated books and artists’ books, that represent the full range of printmaking techniques from the beginnings of the medium into the present and print production around the globe. The Spencer Collection surveys the illustrated word and book bindings of all periods and all countries and cultures, from medieval manuscripts, Japanese scrolls, and Indian miniatures to monuments in Renaissance printing, illustration, livres d'artistes and contemporary artists’ books.

    The Librarian II will support public service and instruction for collections held in the Wallach Division, with a focus on the Print and Spencer Collections. This position is temporary through the incumbent's leave.
