As generative AI tools become increasingly omnipresent in every aspect of work, school, and daily life, librarians will need to grapple with whether and how to use and teach about AI tools in their work. Please join ACRL NY’s New Librarians Discussion Group for a candid discussion with other library students and new librarians on the role of AI tools in library school, the workplace, and in the job hunt.

We’ll discuss our current experiences with AI tools, ethical considerations, and the newly released ALA AI Competencies for Academic Library Workers. Diverse perspectives are welcome, from AI skeptics to AI fans, and feel free (but not obliged!) to bring articles, videos, and other resources to share with other attendees.

No matter where you are in your library career, all are welcome to join this timely conversation.

    Description:

The rise of the organized censorship movement has raised the stakes of library advocacy. Uncritical continue to push for increased budgets and additional staff, but now many of us also face existential threats in the form of systematic and accelerating disinvestment, uncritical technology adoption, restrictions on our professional agency and autonomy, and a lack of public understanding of the critical social infrastructure libraries provide. What we learn from these struggles can inform advocacy beyond our shelves as we work toward the world we deserve.

This program is open to ACRL/NY members.
